Ladbrokes Darts Betting
Ladbrokes history dates back to Warwickshire in 1886, when the Schwind Pennington partnership started out as commission agents.
Eventually moving operations to London and with only a few betting shops from the mid 1960’s (under the new ownership of Mark and Cyril Stein), Ladbrokes’ growth exploded (also due to the new legislation legalizing better shops) across the country. Shops numbers increased from just over 50 to hitting over 1,000 by 1973.
Ladbrokes was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1967 and invested (and divested) in other diversified income streams such as hotels, casinos, racecourses and DIY retail chains, eventually buying popular bookmaker Coral in 1998.
After further asset sales (including Coral), the Ladbrokes and Coral groups decided to merge, becoming the London Stock Exchange listed Ladbrokes Coral Group as well as England’s biggest bookmaker. This group was eventually taken over by the GVC Holdings group (now Entain) in late 2017.

Coral Darts Betting
Coral’s history started with bookmaker Joe Coral in 1926 initially operating on racecourse along with speedways, eventually opening an office in London.
From these initial racecourse operations, Coral took advantage of the 1961 legislation allowing the opening of betting shops and began to expand. This along with mergers and acquisitions such as the one with Mark Lane operations led to Coral becoming one of the biggest betting brands in the UK.
Not only was Coral one of the biggest bookmakers, they also expanded their footprint into other industries such as casinos, clubs, bingo games, restaurants and hotels. Coral Leisure as it was now known was then purchased by Bass in 1981 with Coral still at the forefront of UK bookmaking.

Paddy Power Darts Betting
The first bookmaker on this list with its beginnings in Ireland, Paddy Power started in 1988 as a result of the merging of several popular Irish bookmakers. Formed partly as a way to insulate against the infiltration of UK bookmakers into Ireland, the merged entity was aggressive in its expansion, building to match the size of the potential UK bookmaker raiders.
Paddy Power expanded throughout Ireland with some of its popularity due to being one of the first bookmakers to introduce novelty bets to the wider public which also helped grow its brand, including unusual betting markets such as the infamous Barack Obama presidential term bet offering.
The owner of Paddy Power, Power Leisure eventually listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2000 to raise funds for future expansion into the UK market as well as overseas. As part of their expansion, Paddy Power purchased popular Australian bookmaker Sportsbet in 2010 and by the early 2010’s were the largest bookmaker in Europe.

Betfair Darts Betting
Betfair is the youngest bookmaker on this list, founded in 2000 as a betting exchange rather than as a traditional bookmaker. Andrew Black and Edward Wray started Betfair using a technical background to build the infrastructure of Betfair and the peer to peer style betting exchange.
Betfair’s growth was rapid amongst punters with many horse races and events holding significant amounts. Betfair also expanded via acquisitions such as the popular UK form guide publisher Timeform in 2006 and the TVG network in the USA in 2009.
Betfair also looked to enter Australia, which turned out to be a rather difficult expansion. A scare campaign was waged by the industry incumbents and the Australian mainland states initially blocked the license of Betfair, with Betfair eventually going through the courts to get licensed.
The benefit of this style of betting exchange was the ability to bet in game or in race which was very popular for punters. Traditionally with bookmakers or betting houses once the race or game started no more bets were allowed however this was turned on its head with Betfair.
Betfair was eventually listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2010 and in 2016 merged with Paddy Power to form Paddy Power Betfair. Betfair maintained its brand independence and is still the most popular betting exchange brand on the market.
Betfair is also a popular sports and race sponsor, from sponsoring football teams across the world such as being the first betting company to feature as a sponsor on an English Premier League kit in 2002 (Fulham) along with worldwide teams such as Palmeiras and Cruzeiro. Betfair is also a prominent horse racing sponsor covering races such as the English St Leger. Darts fans would have noticed the Betfair logo at previous darts events such as the World Matchplay event.
